Five Reasons Why I Started triplo

| - Tim Lake |

I think we are doing something quite different with triplo. There are many foreign owned schools but I think few have started from the ground up with the aim of offering an alternative to the conventional we are aiming to offer something more, something different. I thought you might find it interesting to know some of the reasons why I started triplo and some of the thinking behind it, so in this blog post I will briefly give you 5 of the main reasons we are doing what we are doing.

no textbooks

1.) A better way より良い方法

When I first came to Tokyo I was lucky that I found a teaching job at a small independent school in Shinjuku. It wasn’t one of the big name schools - Berlitz, GABA, Coco, ECC, Shane - and better for it. The American headteacher was essentially a polymath - a UX designer, artist, translator - and he had infused the founding of that branch with a particular approach to teaching. He didn’t demand we follow textbooks, and we were encouraged to create original material and to learn by doing. His own lessons were open and original allowing the students to bring their own ideas. It was inspiring and despite my early reliance on text books for basic material, it was a model I tried to emulate.

As the years rolled by things changed at that school. The headteacher left, the ownership changed, and as the school started to resemble the usual eikaiwa more and more, a lot of the creative energy and autonomy from the early days was lost. Change is always difficult, but I was suddenly more aware of the realities of the eikaiwa industry and the eikaiwa style. Through my reading and memories of the old days I started to see things differently and to feel that there must be a better way to do this teaching and learning thing. I had the feeling that the basic principles of the eikawa model were broken, if they were ever good in the first place, and that those principles were not the best for learners/students or teachers.

triplo then, inspired by those early experiences, is an attempt to develop a new set of principles and way of doing things that is good for both learners and teachers. I wanted to try out new and more interesting approaches to learning that drew on "Content and Language Integrated Learning” (CLIL), Task-Based Learning (TBL), Extensive Reading, and other developments in education. The old eikaiwas are stuck in their old ways, they don’t have the flexibility to change and experiment with other ways of doing things - it’s safer to stick with what they know.

2.) No textbooks

Most other schools rely on textbooks or other pre-prepared material. They have good reasons for this but in a lot of cases this material is uninteresting, prescriptive and disconnected from the learner’s lives. It gives little room for either the teacher or the learners to bring themselves and connect to the material. This can be compensated for with good teaching, but learning stuff from a textbook page is not enough anymore, if it ever was. Original material is better than a standardized text book; taking from CLIL and TBL, as well as things like design thinking, we want to try different kinds of lessons that don’t involve simply answering the questions in the book, that can be tailored more specifically to the needs and interests of our learners, and that get us involved in doing something creative. Moreover, as we’ve gone on with triplo we have increasingly realized that interesting content is very important; it gives us a chance to learn things through English, incorporating our own ideas, from news to art, music to philosophy. We are not just teaching or learning English, as most schools do. We want to teach something... and English.

3.) Working conditions

Another reason was that I wanted to create a good place to work, somewhere that was fun, allowed for personal development and freedom to follow my own interests. I was lucky that when I started teaching I was working for a relatively good company with good working conditions, but as periodic articles in the Japan Times highlight, this is not the case for many people working in language schools. They suffer long hours, poor conditions, low pay and in many cases the contracts are also basically illegal under Japanese Employment Law (if they don’t let you take a copy of your contract home, you know it’s basically not legal). Perhaps some people, who are teaching English for a year or two as an “experience”, don’t mind, but when I started to consider the long term options of working in the language teaching industry I decided that making a place I, and others, wanted to work was the best option.

4.) Learning over profit

The essentially exploitive working conditions lead to another thing about most eikaiwas, and this comes a little bit from personal experience too, that is these companies and schools are not really interested in you learning English or good teaching. They are, mostly, only interested in making money. A lot of schools were started in the “boom” era and saw it as a good business opportunity, treating their teachers and you, the students, as a means to an end. Even now there are some people running eikawas just to sell them for profit. However, businesses run only for profit end up being pretty meaningless, souless enterprises. Any profit should be a consequence of doing some well or providing a great service, but it is not the principle aim. So my point is that I started triplo because I believe in the value of learning and the importance of education in people’s lives. Providing the best learning experience and helping you achieve your goals is our aim.

5.)The space matters

For the most part I’ve been very lucky with a lot of the spaces I’ve taught in - big windows, natural light, spacey, clean - but I have taught in and seen some pretty uninspiring “classrooms” that are little more than windowless boxes, more resembling prisons than places to grow your mind. In other cases, I have often wondered why a space for learning needs to look like a cold, corporate office. So, it is not usually the first thing that comes to mind when we think about teaching and learning, and it may not seem that important, but the space does matter. The space, the surroundings, the environment go a long way to creating an inspiring atmosphere to work, learn, collaborate and create in. It should help you relax, but also stimulate the senses, facilitate communication and community. That’s why our slightly open plan space mixes a cafe, a library, a living room and an art gallery. It’s flexible and user friendly, and the space allows us to put more of ourselves into it, it reflects us, and, hopefully, you. The space shows, physically, our philosophy.
