How to study at home - desk & coffee

One of the principle difficulties students have when learning a language is knowing what to study at home between lessons. Some students are exceedingly motivated, but many don’t know what they should be doing between classes. When you take a language lesson only once a week though, it is an exceedingly good idea to devote some time to studying between classes if you want to see improvement in your language ability. So here are some pointers on how to study at home.

英語学習者にとって、レッスン以外の時間に自宅でどんな勉強をすれば良いか、というのは悩みの1つだと思います。
ものすごくモチベーション高い人もいますが、多くの人は何をすればいいのか分からないと思っているようです。
しかし、もし本気で上達したいと考えていて、レッスンを週に1回しか受けていないのなら、自宅学習の時間を設けるのは非常に良いことです。
そこで今回は、自宅学習の方法についてご紹介します。

1.) Review!
Yes, review. This is probably the most important thing that you can do. A day or two after a lesson review what you did. Before you look at the worksheet, handout, or text-book try to recall what the lesson was about, what you did and what the key points were. Ideally you should write them down. Once you’ve done that review the worksheet, handout or textbook to refresh your memory. Memories fade over time, but if they are refreshed and rebuilt after the fact, they become stronger. Regular review of your lessons will make for more effective learning. Plus it doesn’t need to take very long. If you are short on time, this is the single best thing you can do.

2.) Practice.
To take reviewing the lesson material to the next level, try practicing on your own. Usually a lesson will have had a key point or focus. Take the time to write down a few more examples using that key point. Even if the lesson was primarily a speaking task, writing out your ideas on the topic not only helps you practice what you learnt, it helps you to think clearly about what you want to say and build on it for the next time. When you come to that topic or language point again it will be that much stronger. If the lesson was more content based, writing or speaking a summary of the key information or your response to it, would be ideal.

3.) Vocabulary.
The area that most students say they are weak in is vocabulary and it’s generally true. The more words you know, the more accurately you can express your ideas and talk about more topics in a realistic way. Learning vocabulary is probably one of the best things you can do outside of lessons. There are many good books out there with collections of useful vocabulary, but a starting point is simply the vocabulary you have come across in lessons. Even if a lesson was not content based, it is likely there were some words related to the topic you didn’t know. Another starting point is vocabulary related to the topics you want to talk about. We recommend making flash cards, paper or digital, and to practice using the words in context too. That means making sentences!

4.) Read.
If you don’t know already, we love books and reading. We think this is probably the most effective way to improve your language learning outside of lessons. Ideally you should have access to a library of graded readers that have books that match your level, but if that is not the case, you can either buy readers from the bookshop, or go online to find suitable resources to read. In Japan, things like the "Japan Times ST" and "Asahi Weekly" provide up to date reading material at a variety of levels and reasonable cost. Extensive reading provides you with a lot of input which is necessary for building your language knowledge and in the long run, improving your output - speaking.

5.) Study Time.
Students often don’t know how much they should study outside of class. Of course this is a vary individual thing as people have different schedules and different goals. If you really want to see improvement we would suggest doing twenty-five minutes a day three - five times a week, combining all the points suggested above plus more. If your time is limited a quick review of lesson material twice a week between classes is a good starting point to aim for.

5.) 勉強時間
レッスン外でどのくらい勉強するべきか分からない学習者も多いようです。 もちろん、人によって日々のスケジュールも目標も違っていますので、勉強時間も変わってきます。
もしも本気で上達したいのなら、週に3〜5日、1日25分程度の勉強をおすすめします。 上述した学習方法を組み合わせて行なってみてください。
もし短時間しか取れないのなら、レッスンで配布された教材を週に2回程度簡単に見直すだけでも、自宅学習は始められます。

If you really don’t know what to study you can always ask your teacher or language coach to provide you with material to practice at home. You can also find plenty of language learning resources online and we will compile a list of the best to help you in a future post. If you have any ideas or questions about studying at home, we’d love to hear them.

もし何をすればいいのか全然わからない、勉強する教材が欲しいという人は、講師にいつでも尋ねてください。
また、インターネット上にも便利なリソースは豊富にあります。 今後そのリストもご紹介していこうと思います。
自宅学習に関するさらに良いアイディアや質問があれば、ぜひ聞かせてください。
