英語の歴史、世界共通語としての英語

The Story of English - UK Map

There are many good reasons to learn English, one of them is because it has become a global language, the lingua franca. What makes English work as a global language is not just the questionable influence of the British Empire - which has a lot to answer for - but its flexibility, something that has developed due to it’s history.

英語を学ぶべき理由はたくさんあります。英語が世界共通語”リンガ・フランカ”であることも、その1つです。
英語を世界共通語にしたのはイギリス帝国だと言われていますが(もちろんそれは大きな側面ではありますが)、実際は英語が持つ柔軟性であり、歴史が言語を形成してきたのです。

Actually English isn’t really even from England, which makes some of the issues around BREXIT seem like nonsense. Although it began over 2000 years ago, most of the linguistic features that went into creating English were imported, or even imposed, from mainland Europe. What is now the U.K. was originally occupied by Celts, people who became what we largely now know as Welsh and Scots. It surprises many, especially outside of the U.K., that people in parts of Scotland and certainly Wales, speak a language other than English - Gaelic and Welsh. In fact, I had an old acquaintance who was Welsh and used to say “English” was her second language, the first being Welsh!

The early parts of English history were pretty chaotic. Starting with the Romans, countless peoples from Europe, tried to, or succeeded in, invading the British Isles. Each left their mark on the language. What is remarkable is that modern English has essentially adapted and absorbed all those linguistic influences, in a continual process of people, who spoke differently, trying to become mutually understandable. However, the confusing spelling rules, and the disconnection between spelling and pronunciation - two things that make English a challenge to learn - are side effects of that. Eventually a semi-standardised version of English was established in the U.K. when English replaced the use of French in parliament and eventually Latin in schools, in the 14th Century.

Around the world now, there are any number of different Englishes being spoken, all slightly different. Of course we can go on endlessly simply about the differences between American and British English, but there are many others - Australian, Indian, Nigerian, South African to name a few. The process of adding to and adapting the language is still on-going, as people make use of the flexibility, and essentially democratic nature, of English. It has become a global language, a common language, a lingua franca, where each group has adapted it to its needs.

Don’t panic! The core of English remains the same worldwide, but understanding that English is a Lingua Franca (ELF) has some important implications for learners. The first is, that especially in business, you are more likely to be using English with another non-native speaker than with a native speaker. This means you have to use language - vocabulary and pronunciation - that can be understood by both sides. This leads to the second point, which is that speaking at a native level need not necessarily be what you have to aim for. A lot of the colloquial expressions and idioms that native speakers use are of little or no use in effective communication with non-native speakers - and considering how many there are to learn, this ought to be some relief.

As a learner of English, it is certainly worth understanding a little more about the history of English. It helps to make sense of where the language comes from, where it is now as a lingua franca, and where it might be going in the future, as well as why it is a good language to learn.

英語学習者として、英語の歴史を知ることは大変価値のあることです。英語の起源、現在英語がリンガ・フランカであること、今後英語の未来はどのようなものになるのか、そして英語を学ぶメリットとは何なのかを、理解できることでしょう。
