triplo word of the week - bully

 

今週の #WOTW は先週の「bully」です。”Bully” is a verb, a noun, and an adjective, as well as something that shouldn’t be tolerated... Or should it?

:

Let’s have a look at the noun first.

:

- I tried to avoid the bullies when I was in school. (A person who habitually seeks to harm or intimidate those whom they perceive as vulnerable.)

- Bully sandwiches, again? (Short for ‘bully beef’, another name for corned beef.)

-We didn’t expect such a dull game before the bully. (The act of starting play in field hockey, in which two opponents strike each other's sticks and then go for the ball.)

Now, the verb.

:

- Children who are bullied should immediately seek adult help. (Seek to harm, intimidate, or coerce someone perceived as vulnerable.)

- There was a problem with the puck so it took ages for them to bully and start to play. (Start play with a bully in field hockey).

The adjective is what we’ll be looking at next.

:

- Your paintings are bully. You should have an exhibition. (Informal North American for ‘very good’ or ‘excellent’.)
