アメリカ英語とイギリス英語にはどのような違いがあるのでしょうか

It has been said that Britons and Americans are divided by a common language. Both groups speak English, but there are some significant differences in the use of vocabulary that can cause misunderstanding and confusion. There are also differences in spelling and grammar usage too.

イギリス人とアメリカ人は共通の言語によって分けられていると言われています。どちらのグループも英語を話しますが、語彙の使い方には大きな違いがあり、誤解や混乱を招くことがあります。また、スペルや文法の使い方にも違いがあります。

Here we will explain a few common differences in words and spelling:

ここでは、単語とスペルのよくある違いについて説明します。

1. Pants - In American English, these are what men typically wear on their legs. In British English it is trousers and pants refer to underwear.
   Pants - アメリカ英語では、男性が脚につける一般的なものを指します。それは、イギリス英語ではtrousersと呼ばれ、pantsは下着のことを指します。
2. Sidewalk is American, but British people say pavement. Sidewalk is probably a better description. Both mean the place where people walk next to a road.
   Sidewalk （歩道）はアメリカ英語ですが、イギリス人はpavementと言います。Sidewalkの方が良い表現かもしれません。どちらも道路の横にある人が歩ける場所という意味です。
3. Elevator is American and literally means a machine that elevates or lifts. So, British people call it a lift!
   Elevator (エレベーター)はアメリカ英語で、文字通り昇降させる機械という意味です。イギリス人はエレベーターをliftと呼びます。
4. Technically speaking there is a difference between a cookie and a biscuit, however, Americans don’t understand what a biscuit is. British people eat biscuits, Americans eat cookies, but they are basically the same thing.
   厳密に言うと、クッキーとビスケットは違うのですが、アメリカ人はビスケットが何なのか理解していません。イギリス人はbiscuitを食べ、アメリカ人はcookieを食べますが、基本的には同じものです。
5. Faucet is American and for a long time, I didn’t know what it meant! For British people, we call it a tap. Both mean the pipe that water comes out of in your kitchen or bathroom.
   Faucetはアメリカ英語で、私は長い間意味がわかりませんでしたが、イギリス英語ではtapと呼びます。Faucetもtapもどちらも、キッチンやバスルームで水が出てくるパイプのことです。
6. I prefer the word restroom, which is what Americans use, whereas British people call it a toilet.
   私はアメリカ人が使うrestroomという言葉が好きなのですが、イギリス人はtoiletと呼びます。
7. The space you have at the back or front of your house for growing plants or relaxing is called a yard in American and a garden in British English.
   家の裏や表にある、植物を育てたり、くつろいだりするためのスペースを、アメリカ英語ではyard、イギリス英語ではgardenと呼びます。
8. Movies are American and films are British. In America, they go to a movie theater and in the UK they go to a cinema.
   映画については、moviesがアメリカ英語で、filmsはイギリス英語です。アメリカではtheater（映画館）に行き、イギリスではcinema（映画館）に映画鑑賞に行きます。
9. Americans usually go on vacation, while British people go on holiday.
   旅行のことをアメリカ人は通常vacation（休暇）と言いますが、イギリス人はholidayと呼びます。
10. And when they go to work in the city, Londoners use the underground and New Yorkers use the subway.
    都市に出勤する際、ロンドンの人はunderground（地下鉄）を、ニューヨーカーは、subway（地下鉄）を利用します。

As for spelling, American spellings are usually closer to the sound of the word than British spellings, although the pronunciation remains the same. This is because Noah Webster changed the spellings to make the words easier to spell when he wrote the first American dictionary in the early 19th Century. 

スペルについては、発音は変わりませんが、アメリカ英語のスペルの方がイギリス英語のスペルよりも単語の音に近いことが多いです。これは、ノア・ウェブスターが19世紀初頭にアメリカで最初の辞書を書いた際に、単語を綴りやすくするために綴りを変えたからなのです。
