So, what is a hobby anyway?

| - Tim Lake |

When English language learners introduce themselves or ask each other questions when they first meet, there are typically four areas we want to cover - name, job, hometown and hobby. Not a lot, but enough to give people a basic idea of who we are. The first three questions are easy enough but talking about hobbies can be difficult. Some people say they don't have a hobby or that their hobby is sleeping or watching TV, which made me think, what is a hobby and how is it different from other things we do in our free time?

In the dictionary, "hobby" means an activity we do regularly in our leisure time for pleasure or fun. The word comes from an old children's toy called a "hobby horse" and used to have a negative meaning. It was only after working hours started to be reduced and incomes increased that people had the time and money to indulge in hobbies and the word took on the meaning we understand today. The idea of a hobby is a fairly new one then, but one that has become more important during the 20th and 21st centuries.

Another word for "hobby" is pastime, which comes from pass the time. Usually, a hobby is something more than just something to pass the time though. This is why listening to music, reading, and watching TV don't typically count as hobbies. A hobby is something that creates value or has a meaningful purpose, at least for the person doing the activity, and that purpose isn't a financial reward. It is also something that gives a feeling of achievement because it requires effort and needs to be done regularly. A hobby is something that should add something, like a new skill or area of knowledge, to your life.

This reminds me of what the philosopher Aristotle called "Eudaemonia". He believed that human beings could reach their full potential and flourish only by living actively. What you do in your leisure time, your hobby, helps to live a eudaemonic - a flourishing - life, and helps you to develop another side of yourself that is distinct from work. As a result, it makes you happier. Watching TV and sleeping are good ways to relax but they don't help you live a more active life.

There are people who take their hobbies very seriously and we often use the word "hobbyist" to describe these kinds of people. The word is similar in meaning to amateur and suggests someone who is dedicated to a topic or activity. They have reached a high standard but aren't professional. Their hobby has become a central part of who they are and what they do in life. There are a lot of hobbyist astronomers, for example, who have even made major discoveries.

Well, what are some examples of hobbies? Here are a few possible categories:

  1. Collecting - Collecting stamps is a good example, but it could be collecting anything, even train-spotting is a form of collecting.
