英語学習の方法は2つだけ

Although we talk about different ways and different stages of learning English, there are only two ways your brain can learn new knowledge. These are called implicit learning, and explicit learning, which can be thought of as sub-conscious learning and conscious learning. And to learn effectively, you need both.

英語学習にはさまざまな方法や段階がありますが、脳が新しい知識を学習する方法は2つしかありません。それは暗黙的学習と明示的学習と呼ばれますが、潜在意識的学習と意識的学習という言葉に置き換えて考えられます。そして、より効果的な学習をするにはこの両方が必要なのです。

Now, by implicit meaning, do we mean that you can listen to English tapes in your sleep and wake up in the morning being able to speak English? No, of course not! But you can pick up and learn a tremendous amount of English without slavishly studying grammar and vocabulary books.

ここでいう暗黙的学習というのは、就寝時に英語の音源を聞いて、朝起きたら英語が話せるようになっているということでしょうか？いや、もちろんそんなことはありません！しかし、文法書や単語本などでがむしゃらに勉強しなくても、膨大な量の英語を身につけたり、学ぶことができます。

As an adult learner of English, you can't learn English the same way as children do, but it is helpful to keep in mind how children learn to speak their native language. They don't learn it from grammar books! While parents do teach and correct a child's spoken language, a lot of what they learn is implicit, they pick it up simply from being active and engaging with the world around them - hearing and having conversations, watching TV, playing with friends, taking lessons at school. Implicit learning is basically what you get from massive amounts of input.

成人してから英語を学ぶ人たちは、子供が英語を学ぶ同じ方法で学習することはできませんが、子供が母国語を話せるようになるためにどのように学んでいるかという方法を念頭に置くことは大切です。子供たちは母国語を文法書からは学びませんよね。親が子どもに話し言葉を教えたり、直したりしながら、子供たちは積極的に自分の周りの世界と関わりながら無意識のうちに覚えていきます。それは、会話を聞いたり、おしゃべりしたり、テレビを見たり、お友達と遊んだり、学校の授業を通して学んでいきます。このように暗黙的学習とは、基本的に膨大な量のインプットから得られるものです。

It is an interesting point, that before I became an English teacher, I knew very little about how English grammar worked! This might partly have been due to my poor education, but it goes to show, that while I didn't know the "rules" of grammar, I could use and understand English without any problems. All that grammar was implicit knowledge and not something I learnt explicitly. The same is true of anyone's first language, you can use it perfectly without explicitly knowing the grammar.

面白いことに、私は英語教師になる前、英文法の仕組みをほとんど知りませんでした。これは私が受けた教育が悪かったせいもあるかもしれませんが、文法の「ルール」を知らなくても、英語を使って理解することには全く問題がなかったということです。文法はすべて暗黙知識であり、意識的に学んだものではありませんでした。同じことが皆さんの母国語の習得にも当てはまります。文法を明確に知らなくても完璧に使いこなすことができるわけです。

However, explicit learning has many benefits. Children have amazing brains for absorbing information, but they aren't so good at learning things explicitly. In fact for adults, explicit learning can be a useful way to speed up the learning process, however, it does take time for what you learn to become automatic knowledge. Explicit learning is particularly useful for vocabulary learning and for learning some grammar points.

しかし、明示的学習には多くの利点があります。子供は情報を吸収する素晴らしい頭脳を持っていますが、意識的に物事を勉強することは得意ではありません。実際、大人にとっては、明示的学習は、学習プロセスを速めるのに有効な方法ですが、学習したことが自動的に知識となるまでには時間がかかります。明示的学習は、特に語彙の学習や、文法事項の学習に有効です。

Only some grammar?

一部の文法だけ学習する方法はどうでしょうか？

Yes, only some, because the grammar that you need to learn explicitly is only the grammar that you don't understand, or that you keep using incorrectly.

良いとおもいます。意識的に学ばなければならない文法は、自分が理解していない、あるいは間違った使い方をしている文法だからです。

So, how do you learn grammar then?

では、どのように文法を学習するのでしょうか？

Implicitly, that's how.

暗黙的学習ではこのようになります。

The main problem that learners have, especially those who take lessons at eikaiwa schools in Japan, is that they rarely, probably never, get enough on the input side. This makes implicit learning very difficult. If you start to think about how many hours and hours a child gets of input, you start to see why they appear to learn so quickly (although it's a good ten or more years before they are truly competent users of their first language). What this means for adult learners like you, is that to get better at English quicker you need to increase the amount of input.

特に日本の英会話スクールなどでレッスンを受けている学習者が抱える最大の問題点は、インプット面で十分なものを得ることがほとんどないことです。これでは暗黙的学習が非常に難しくなります。子供が何時間も繰り返してインプットされている環境にいるということを考えれば、子供がなぜあんなに早く学んでいるように見えるのかがわかります（ただし彼らが第一言語を本当に使いこなせるようになるまでには10年以上はかかります）。このことから、あなたのような大人の学習者にとって、英語を早く上達させるためにはインプットの量を増やす必要があるということを意味しています。

We always hammer on about extensive reading, as this is the best way to increase your levels of input, but it is not the only way and it is not the only way you should use either.

多読はインプットのレベルを上げるための最良の方法であると、いつも私たちは強調してはいますが、それが英語学習における唯一の方法ではありませんし、それだけを行うべきでもありません。

This may be the only time I will recommend watching TV, but it might be the case that watching lots of TV in English is better than time spent with your head in a grammar book. It's also massively more fun! In fact, a student once told me that watching lots of episodes of Hawaii 5-0 gave a clear improvement in listening and understanding of English. Podcasts and radio also work. What matters is consistency, and making a regular effort to increase your levels of input, and thereby improve your implicit learning.

私がテレビを見ることを勧めるのはこの機会だけかもしれませんが、英語でテレビをたくさん見ることは、文法書を使って頭で勉強する時間よりも効果的かもしれません。そして文法書での学習よりは楽しくなると思います。実際、ある生徒さんは、「Hawaii 5-0」のエピソードをたくさん見ることで、英語の聞き取りや理解力が明らかに向上したと言っていました。ポッドキャストやラジオも効果的です。重要なのは一貫性であり、インプットのレベルを上げるために定期的な努力をすることで、暗黙的学習で知識を伸ばすことができるのです。

It is important not to worry or panic if you don't understand 100% of what you watch or listen to. It is a problem if you don't understand anything, but otherwise, just focus on what you can understand. Another advantage of the digital age is that you can watch or listen to the same thing many times, you can add or remove subtitles and, with podcasts, you can slow the speed down too. All of this helps you with learning.

例え視聴したり聞こえてくるものから100％理解できなくても、心配したり慌てたりしないことが大切です。もちろん全く何も理解できないのは問題かもしれませんが、そうでなければ、理解できることに集中すればいいのです。デジタル時代のもう一つの利点は、同じものを何度も繰り返し見たり聞いたりできること、字幕を追加したり削除したりできること、またポッドキャストにおいては速度を遅くすることもできることです。この方法は、皆さんの英語学習に役立ちます。

One final point is this, implicit learning and explicit learning reinforce and help each other. So remember, there are two ways to learn English - implicit and explicit - and you need them both.

最後のポイントは、暗黙的学習と明示的学習は、お互いに補い合い、助け合うと存在であるということです。つまり、英語学習には暗黙的学習と明示的学習の2つの方法があり、その両方が必要だということを是非覚えておいてください。
