今週の #WOTW は 'christmas’ です。You thought it was over, didn't you? Plus we know what you're thinking: "What could you possibly tell me about Christmas that I don't already know?". Well, maybe you know everything there is to know about the word 'Christmas', or maybe you don't. The only way to find out is to keep on reading!

:

'Christmas' is a name and as such it is written with a capital C.

:

- Do you decorate your house for Christmas? (The annual Christian festival celebrating Christ's birth, held on 25 December in the Western Church.)

:

It is also very commonly used as a modifier.

- Christmas food
- Christmas music
etc.

:

You can also use its plural form, in which case we usually write it with a lower case c.

:

- As far as I can remember all my christmases have been fun.

:

We don't only or always mean the 25th of December when we say 'Christmas'. More often than not we mean the time before and after that day.

:

- Are you going back home for Christmas?

:

How's it going? Anything you didn't know yet? No? Let us try harder. What do you think 'Christmas' means in the following sentence?

:

- Christmas! Did he really say that?

:

'Christmas' is also an informal exclamation showing surprise, dismay, or despair. Did you know that? You did? Did you also know that 'Christmas' comes from Old English Crīstes mæsse, that is Christ mass? Well now you do. You're welcome.

:

発音は/ˈkrɪsməs/です。日本語で言うと音節は4つですけど、英語で2つです。後ろに/U/の音ださないようにしましょう。また来週!
