Fair” is an adjective with several different meanings. It can also be an adverb. Let’s find out what the meanings are.

The first meaning of the adjective “fair” is treating people equally.

+ It was a fair hearing and the judge gave a fair punishment.

The second meaning of the adjective “fair” is light coloured skin or hair.

The third meaning of the adjective “fair” means less than a lot, but more than a little; a considerable amount.

+ He did a fair bit of teaching in Japan.

+ I did a fair bit of training to be able to compete in the race.

When talking about weather, the adjective “fair” means fine and dry.

+ It was a fair autumn day, prefect for hiking.

+ Let’s pray for fair weather for race day.

As an adverb “fair” means without cheating

:

+ The other team didn’t play fair at all. There should have been a red card or two.

+ He played fair, but still lost.
